New House Haiku with Egregious Exclamation Points

Drove to house Tuesday.
Saw orange, dropped jaw, exclaimed, "Noooooo!!!!
This will not work. Fix it. Pleeeeease!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

As George said when I posted this picture on Facebook, it's worse in real life. Bright pumpkin orange stucco just finished Monday, and everyone's appalled...even the woman who picked the color...a woman who did a fine, understated, and conservative job with every other color choice for this house and is as shocked as the rest of us.

Can you imagine how the orange will pop when the sky is bright blue instead of snowy gray?

*shudder*

A friend asked if we were Tennessee fans. No. No, we're not. My blood runs Duke blue, George's runs Carolina blue, and we wouldn't put stucco in those colors on the exterior of this house, either.  The house needs some color, but I was thinking about painting the front door, eventually. Orange, however, wasn't a color I was considering.

The builder will fix this, which is why I snort laughter every time I see this picture. Laughter with a slightly hysterical edge, to be sure. But laughter, nevertheless.

We're still waiting to hear if we close today. There's been a holiday-related hold-up with the title paperwork, but our mortgage agent thinks it will get cleared up soon. Will keep you posted.

  3. Overlooking the orange (which to be honest is rather like the elephant in the room :)) Your house is just gorgeous! I can't wait for pictures of your new stamp space!!

  4. Ummm, no. No orange! I'm thinking a gray-blue, but it's hard to tell the stone color from a picture. Can't wait to see what color you choose.

We had a wonderful Christmas. All 14 of our family (4 kids, 5 grandkids, assorted in-laws) for Christmas brunch -- couldn't have been more perfect unless my mother could have come up from VA. Hope yours was equally great! A new home is an exciting prospect for the New Year!!! Best wishes.

  5. I don't know what shocks me more; the orange on your house or the fact that a Duke fan and a Carolina fan have married!!!!!!! ( egregious exclamation points on purpose ).

Having lived down in NC for six years I've become aware of what a rivalry those two teams have.

The house is gorgeous despite the orange but I am glad you are getting it fixed; I don't think I could live with it either. :-)

  6. Mary, love knows no bounds! Shockingly, until I attended Duke, I was a true-blue Tar Heel. I still pull for them...as long as they aren't playing the Blue Devils!

And yes, that is an epic rivalry!

  7. Despite the orange, your new house looks gorgeous! Isn't it wonderful that all it requires is a can of paint? Perhaps a Modern Basic supersized stencil?

  8. LOVE the house. Especially your side entry garage. I hate how the invention of the great room/family room pushed all the garages out past the front of most houses. I don't want people to see my house and say, "what a lovely garage".

Hmm, orange does not belong on a house. I would vote for the same color you have all your trim. It would pull it all together.

Sooo exciting to be moving to a new space. I know it's hard work; but how lovely it will be to be in a brand new home. Good luck this week!

  9. Pantone recently announced the color for 2012: Tangerine Tango! You're a trend setter, Susan!

  10. Oh, my! Yes, that orange has to go! The house is beautiful otherwise. Congratulations!

  11. I can't believe how truly awful the orange looks! It's all your eye sees when you look at the house. Please post a picture after it's fixed so we can see how lovely the house is with a more appropriate colour.

  12. I love the design of your home and all the stone work. It will be wonderful to follow the progress with you ... even a year from now when the landscape is growing out. Can't wait to see the inside when you're all moved in and settled! What fun!

  13. Personally, call me crazy, but I kinda like the orange. Ok, maybe not THERE - probably more as an accent colour in a kitchen, say - but I like the colour itself.

I love the house. That dark colour on the other side - it looks brownish red on my screen - would be a nice colour where the orange is.

  14. Oh, yah. Unless you're looking for the bright orange, harvest gold and olive green of the 1970's, it's gotta go! Otherwise, it looks great. :)

  15. LOL! I bet you just about died, Susan! At least it is only paint and NOT brick or siding. You could paint some black tiger stripes on it to be funny with a big WHO DEY flag in the yard. It would be fun to see what your new neighbors would think!

The house is beautiful. I bet you are super excited. :)

  16. Did you ever get the orange stucco repainted?

  17. Yes, Sue. We did. I just haven't posted a picture yet. Our yard is still mud and doesn't have a final grade, the sold sign is still in the yard because they put it in with concrete (WHY?!?!?!), and all the rain we're getting is just delaying everything. But I'll try to get a picture of the house. It's nice and boring now. I'm going to paint the door brick red, though, this summer, so it will definitely look better after that!
